Switzerland suffers under Austrian Habsburg rule. When huntsman William Tell aids a fugitive farmer, he becomes entangled in the burgeoning Swiss resistance. After defying the oppressive Viceroy Gessler's command to bow to a symbol of Austrian authority, Tell is coerced into a perilous act: shooting an apple off his son's head.
